Orlando Bloom was born on 13 January, 1977 in Canterbury, Kent. At age 16, he
joined the National Youth Theatre for two seasons. He then won himself a
scholarship to train at the British American Drama Academy, and on completion
won the lead role in A Walk in the Vienna Woods. Later Orlando
joined the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating from the three year
course in 1999.
Just two days before graduating, Orlando landed the role of Legolas Greenleaf in
Peter Jackson's movie adaptation of JRR Tolkien's classic novel trilogy
The Lord of the Rings. Originally auditioning by video for the
part of Faramir, he was later asked by Peter Jackson to read for the part of
Legolas instead. Orlando was told he won the role a few weeks later,
and then spent almost two years in New Zealand filming the epic trilogy.
That role was a fantastic kick-start to Orlando's movie career, and soon after he appeared in several films; first Black Hawk
Down and The Kelly Gang, then Pirates of the Caribbean. He soon started playing major starring roles, including in Kingdom of Heaven and Elizabethtown.
His other past roles include Wilde, which at age 20 was
his first movie, and parts in British television shows such as Casualty and Midsomer Murders. From
these performances, Orlando was offered several movie roles, but turned them
down in favour of performing in theatre, and further studying the craft of
acting. His theatre appearances include Twelfth Knight,
Little Me, The Seagull, Trojan Women,
A Night Out and Mephisto, just to name a few.
In his spare time, Orlando enjoys adrenaline activities such as skydiving, abseiling, surfing, skiing,
snowboarding and bungee jumping. He spent much of his spare time in New Zealand
whilst filming LotR bungee jumping, as well as surfing with fellow cast members.
Another of Orlando's favourite hobby's is photography, his favourite football
team is Manchester United, he once smoked, but
now apparently bites his nails instead and can
boast to having "the best pair of legs since Robin Hood: Men in
Tights". ('Force of
Hobbit').
